How Much Does Garden Design Cost in London?

If you are thinking about redesigning your garden, one of the first questions is usually cost. The answer depends on how large your space is, how you want to use it, and how much change is needed. Every garden is different, but some clear guidelines can help you plan.
At Patchworks we design and build gardens across South London. Our aim is to create gardens that feel good to live with, not just look good on paper. Below is a straightforward guide to how garden design costs usually break down.

Design Fees
Design work is usually charged as a fixed fee, agreed before any work begins. This includes a full site survey, three concept layout options, detailed 2D drawings, a planting plan, and outline cost estimates for the build and planting.
Small gardens (i.e courtyards and terraces): £1,350–£2,000 + VAT Ideal for smaller spaces where access is straightforward and materials are simple.
Medium gardens (typical Victorian terrace plots): £2,000–£3,000 + VAT The most common size in South London, usually including a paved terrace, planting beds, and modest level changes.
Large or complex gardens: from £3,000 + VAT. For multi-level layouts, extensive planting areas, or gardens that require more detailed structural input.
I ask for 50 percent on booking the brief meeting and survey and the balance once the final design is approved.
This fee does not include detailed outsourced topographical surveys or input from structural engineers if these are required.
Build Costs
Build costs vary according to access, materials and complexity. As a general guide:
Simple redesigns with new paving and planting: from £15,000 to £25,000
Full redesigns with terraces, walls, lighting and planting: £30,000 to £60,000
Larger or complex gardens with level changes or bespoke features: £60,000 to £80,000 and above
Good design allows you to phase work or focus on key areas first if needed.

Planting
Planting is where design comes alive. It adds character and structure, and brings texture and colour through the seasons. Planting projects, including soil preparation and installation, usually range from £1,500 to £8,000, depending on size, density and the level of detail. Each plan is tailored to the site and designed for long-term interest rather than short-term effect.

Lighting and Irrigation
Lighting adds a bit of atmosphere while irrigation helps with maintenance.
Lighting systems start from £1,200
Irrigation systems start from £800
Both can be installed during the main build.
What Affects Cost Most
Access and ease of delivery
Material choice and finishes
Level changes and retaining walls
Additional services such as lighting or irrigation
A Good Rule of Thumb
Many London gardens sit comfortably within a budget of £20,000 to £60,000 including design. As a guide, investing around ten to fifteen percent of your property’s value in the garden often adds equivalent value to the home itself.
